Celie,the protagonist and narrator of The Color Purple. Celie is a poor, uneducated black woman with a sad personal history. She was refered as "ugly" to many; she wore old clothes, very dark, and a servant. She survives a stepfather who rapes her and steals her babies and also survives an abusive husband. As an adult, Celie befriends and finds intimacy with a blues singer, Shug Avery, who gradually helps Celie find her way to speak for herself. In the beginning of The Color Purple Celie struggles to speak for herself and let many people run over her like her father and her husband. She then seek help from her husband's old girlfriend, Shug Avery, to find a voice. By the endding of the novel Celie is happy and independent. She reunites with her children and her sister Nettie, who she loved dearly and was forced to stay away from.
